Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church’s food pantry was blessed to receive two cash donations this past month to provide food for those in need.
As part of the “Feeding the Gulf Coast” program, our volunteers follow their mission guidelines: “Working through member organizations and special programs, we provide nutritious food to meet the challenge of feeding people who are hungry as a result of personal crisis or disaster. We work to educate the public regarding domestic hunger, proper nutrition, and related issues.” Food gets to those in need in our community through food donations to the Mobile area food bank by national donors, USDA, and local retailers and farmers. It is then inspected for safety and stored until it is distributed to over 400 partner agencies. These agencies include church food pantries, such as the one at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church, soup kitchens, and other charitable organizations. Then the partner agencies purchase the food at a very reduced price to provide the food to people in need in the community.
This past month, the food pantry received a cash donation from Lillian’s own Red Hatters group. The group, led by Judy Wargo, presented the check to Claudette Bobleter (food pantry administrator). The pantry also was awarded a grant from the Gulf States District LWML. The $3,000 grant check was used for a freezer, enabling the food pantry to be able to purchase more frozen food and food items from the Bay Area Food Bank in Mobile. The food pantry serves families with children up to seniors in the area surrounding Lillian. The check was presented to Jackie and representatives from Shepherd of the Bay’s LWML.
The food pantry is open on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the church’s family room. There is paperwork to fill out, but proof of income is NOT required. Shepherd of the Bay is located at 12851 Perdido Street in Lillian, AL. “USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.”
